Maastricht Centre for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE) The Maastricht Centre for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE) is the interdisciplinary research platform of Maastricht University that brings together scholars working in the fields of migration, mobility, citizenship, development and family life. On 20 September 2019, the MACIMIDE Annual Work Conference will take place in Maastricht. During this interdisciplinary conference, researchers within and outside of MACIMIDE will discuss a variety of topics related to migration, such as education, return migration, migrants and the receiving society, labour migration, knowledge transfer and corruption. Migration Management and the Migration–Development Nexus (MIGNEX) MIGNEX is a five-year research project (2018–2023) with the core ambition of creating new knowledge on migration, development and policy. MIGNEX is the largest-ever European-funded research project on migration, involving researchers from nine institutions in Europe, Africa and Asia. UNU-MERIT and the Faculty of Law at Maastricht University are part of the consortium led by Prof. Jørgen Carling at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) in Norway. From 18-19 June 2019, Prof. Melissa Siegel and Dr. Lisa Andersson travelled to Oslo where they met with consortium partners and participated in a methodology workshop. The first edition of the MIGNEX quarterly newsletter, launched in early June, included the new MIGNEX Handbook Chapter on communications and impact, valuable reading recommendations from Dr. Aysen Üstübici and Prof. Mathias Czaika and reflections from Prof. Carling on what excites him about the project. Kenya Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Migration Studies Launched After more than a year of preparation, the new Kenyan Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Migration Studies for the Kenyan Government was launched in the first week of May 2019. The programme was developed for the Kenyan Department of Immigration Service. It is funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH through the Better Migration Management (BMM) Programme and is implemented in cooperation with UNU-MERIT and its School of Governance and with the University of Nairobi. Students are officials from Kenya, Uganda, Sudan and Somalia. UNU-MERIT is responsible for delivering half of the courses in the nine-month programme including three of the core courses: ‘Introduction to Migration’, ‘Migration Policy and Governance’ and ‘Migration and Development’. Prof. Melissa Siegel, Dr. Lisa Andersson, Dr. Katrin Marchand and Sarah Langley have all been involved in the new programme. |

Rwandan Migration Management Diploma Programme Launched In the second week of June 2019, the first Rwandan Migration Management Diploma Programme was launched as a spin off programme from our highly successful Migration Management Diploma Programme (MMDP) offered in Maastricht. This 12-week intensive programme is supported by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) and delivered completely by UNU-MERIT and its School of Governance. The programme covers topics from Migration and Development to International Legal Frameworks with large skill building components. The programme targets specifically experienced DGIE officials and is expected to train new cohorts of 30 students each year. |

6th ICMPD International Summer School on Migration in Georgia From 30 June-6 July 2019, the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) will organise its 6th International Summer School on Migration in Georgia. The purpose of the one-week Summer School is to develop and foster critical academic exchange and reflection on migration issues among Master’s students and young professionals from Armenia, Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan. Prof. Ronald Skeldon, Prof. Melissa Siegel and Dr. Michaella Vanore will contribute to the Summer School by giving lectures on ‘Introduction to Migration Studies’, ‘Migration Trends’, ‘Migration and Development’ and more. The summer school is a joint initiative of three ICMPD-led projects: MOBILAZE, ENIGMMA 2 and the Prague Process. |

14th Summer Institute on Migration and Global Health From 10-13 July 2019, Dr. Michaella Vanore and researcher Inez Roosen will attend the 14th Summer Institute on Migration and Global Health in Oakland, California, USA. Organised by the University of California Berkeley, the Summer Institute is a unique international event offering researchers, academics, graduate students, and professionals the opportunity to learn about the most relevant topics related to migration and global health. Through a combination of lectures and workshops, participants will receive the latest information on issues that affect the health and health behaviours of mobile populations around the world. The conference will create possibilities to network with national and international experts on public health, public policy, and social science. During this event, Dr. Vanore will give a presentation on the Migration Group’s health-related research work entitled ‘Gender, Vulnerability, & Resilience among Children ‘Left Behind’ by Migrant Kin’. |

3rd Annual Internal Conference of UNU-MERIT On 26 and 27 June 2017, UNU-MERIT hosted its third annual internal conference. The aim of this conference was to increase interactions between UNU-MERIT researchers, especially between the various research themes. Paper presentations were open to all UNU-MERIT staff, on all UNU-MERIT research themes. UNU-MERIT’s research programme is organised around eight research themes based on broadly common methodological approaches: 1. The Economics of Knowledge and Innovation; 2. Social Protection, Inclusive Innovation and Development; 3. Economic Development, Innovation, Governance and Institutions; 4. Sustainable Development, Innovation and Societal Transitions; 5. Innovation Systems Indicators and Policy; 6. Migration and Development; 7. ICT-enabled Innovation and Societal Transformations; 8. Population, Development and Labour Economics. |

Migration Policy Centre Annual Conference From 23-24 May 2019, Prof. Melissa Siegel participated in the Migration Policy Centre Annual Conference entitled ‘Migration between Africa and Europe: Knowledge Production, Attitudes, and Governance’ at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. The conference brought together academics, policymakers and practitioners to discuss new ideas and the latest research evidence on some of the most important migration policy questions in Europe and beyond. The conference addressed three broad questions: what is the use of research in public debates and policy-making on migration between Africa and Europe? Why are there such large gaps between migration debates and migration realities, and how can these gaps be reduced? Prof. Siegel gave a presentation on ‘The Effect of Development Interventions on Migration Decisions’. |

Migration Seminars Within the academic year 2018/2019, the Migration and Development research group at UNU-MERIT and its School of Governance (in conjunction with MACIMIDE) hosted 14 seminars on a diverse range of topics around human mobility. You can listen to several of the seminars as podcasts here. The most recent seminars were given by Dr. Ilse van Liempt from Utrecht University about the ‘Impact of Dispersal on Resettled Refugees’ Home-making and Place Attachment in Small to Medium-Sized Towns in the Netherlands’ and about 'The volume and geography of global refugee migration' by Dr. Sonja Fransen from University of Amsterdam about [add topic here]. There will be no seminars in July and August; the series will resume in September 2019. Douzelage Conference: Integrate Together for a Better European Future From 17-20 April 2019, nine students of our Master’s programme in Public Policy and Human Development (MPP), including six from the Migration Studies specialisation, took part in a three-day conference in Marsaskala, Malta. The conference was organised by the Douzelage European town twinning association within the Europe For Citizens programme. Comprised of 28 member towns in all EU Member States, Douzelage aims to stimulate “opportunities and friendship across Europe through economic, touristic, sporting, educational and cultural exchanges”. The conference programme included presentations, workshops and debates with local and European policy officials and practitioners and gave the opportunity to the students to apply the knowledge they acquired during the MPP programme to real-life policy processes. MOBILAZE Research Methods Training in Baku From 10-12 April 2019, Dr. Ortrun Merkle and PhD fellow Iman Rajabzadeh taught the 5th Migration Research Methods Workshop as part of the project Support to the Implementation of the Mobility Partnership with Azerbaijan (MOBILAZE). The workshop was organised by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in cooperation with the Caucasus Research Resource Center (CRRC) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The workshop focused on conveying research methods in migration research to around 40 university students and professionals. Dr. Merkle instructed a group on in-depth interview skills and qualitative methods while Iman Rajabzadeh concentrated on data visualisation. MOBILAZE aims to support the implementation of the Mobility Partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan with a specific focus on strengthening the capacity of the government to develop and implement the national migration policy. |

Workshop: Law enforcement cooperation on cross-border crimes within the migratory context On 15 February 2019, Dr. Ortrun Merkle participated in the Workshop on ‘Law enforcement cooperation on cross-border crimes within the migratory context under Mobility Partnerships and Common Agendas on Migration and Mobility’ organised by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and Europol at the Europol Headquarter in The Hague, Netherlands. She presented the findings of the report ‘Action Knowledge Transfer on Migrant Smuggling and Trafficking by Air and Document Fraud’ (AKT) written by research officers Clara Alberola and Chiara Janssen and commissioned by ICMPD through the Mobility Partnership Facility with financial support from the European Union. AKT analysed the main features, developments and modus operandi of migrant smuggling at airports, in addition to the topic’s interconnection with document fraud and related polycriminal activities using qualitative and quantitative methods. |

Migration Management Diploma Programme: Application Open We have opened applications for our seventh Migration Management Diploma Programme (MMDP). The application deadline is Sunday 7 July 2019 and the programme will start on 25 September 2019. The MMDP is a three-month programme in which migration practitioners from around the world come to Maastricht to study both theoretical and practical issues related to migration management, migration and development and migration policy. The programme is funded by by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Dutch Repatriation and Departure Service (DT&V) and implemented by UNU-MERIT and its School of Governance. |

Master of Science in Public Policy and Human Development The Master of Science in Public Policy and Human Development programme is a double-degree programme of Maastricht University’s Graduate School of Governance (MGSoG) and University Nations University’s institute UNU-MERIT. The programme provides students with a variety of skills, tools and knowledge which will enable them to work as policy designers and policy analysts in public and private institutions. In doing so, it offers seven different specialisations including Migration Studies. Our next intake will start in September 2019. You can find more information in our brochure. While the application deadline for non-EU/EEU students has passed already, EU-EEA-students can still apply until 15 July. Online Courses For those who are interested but do not have the time to take a full-time course in migration studies, UNU-MERIT and its School of Governance offer a number of specially designed online courses to suit the needs of busy professionals. We currently offer three courses that can be started at any time: 1) Introduction to Migration Studies; 2) Migration and Remittance Effects and 3) Comparative Migration Policy.
