Two Postdocs Openings at MACIMIDE As part of the new interfaculty and interdisciplinary Maastricht Centre for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE), a number of positions will be opening up in the second half of 2013 and first half of 2014 at the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and at UNU-MERIT and the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance. We are currently accepting applications for two Postdoc positions on: 1) migration and poverty; and 2) migration and the left behind. |

Postdoc in Migration and Poverty This Postdoc project aims to examine the linkage between migration and poverty and human development. Its overall research objective is to study both the positive and negative effects on migration on poverty and more general human development. The project builds on previous research and will use several newly collected Maastricht University data sets from the IS Academy Migration and Development: A World in Motion Project. Read more. |

Postdoc in Migration and the Left Behind This Postdoc project aims to examine the effects of migration on the left behind. Its overall research objective is to study both the positive and negative effects of migration on family members and caregivers who stay in the country of origin, whether they are men or women, husbands or wives, children or parents. The project will use previously collected household, community, and school children data sets from Moldova, Georgia, Ghana, Nigeria and Angola. Read more. |

Training Programmes Application Open for Migration Management Diploma Programme 2014 We are now accepting applications for the Migration Management Diploma Programme (MMDP), which starts on 1 April 2014. Sponsored by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we offer 10 scholarships per year to government officials from 40 developing countries with at least three years’ experience in the field of migration and/or asylum. PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENTS |

New Project with COMPAS on the Labour Market Impacts of Forced Migration The Labour Market Impacts of Forced Migration (LAMFOR) is a COMPAS project in partnership with UNU-MERIT and the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance that will provide statistical evidence on the labour market implications of forced migration situations, for the first time. In addition to the core researchers from Oxford and Maastricht, the project has an Expert Advisory Board composed of senior policy makers and senior scholars who interact regularly with policy makers. LAMFOR is funded by the UK Department for International Development (DIFD) and the Institute for the Study of Labour (IZA) of Germany as part of the Growth and Labour Markets in Low Income Countries Programme (GLM-LIC). The project will run from June 2013 to December 2015. |

New Project on Irregular Migration for the Australian National University and the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship UNU-MERIT and the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance have recently been awarded funding for two research projects on irregular migration by The Australian National University and the Irregular Migration Research & Analysis Section of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The first project will look at the determinants and processes of irregular migration from Afghanistan. The second will involve in-depth interviews with irregular Afghan migrants in the Netherlands in order to better understand their decision-making process and experiences. The projects are intended to improve the evidence base on migration processes and pathways of irregular migrants seeking asylum. |

UPCOMING EVENTS |

Registration Open: IS Academy Final Conference We are now welcoming registrations for our IS Academy: Migration and Development final conference which will be held on 22-24 January 2014 in Maastricht. The conference marks the end of a five-year project financed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We will be running sessions on the thematic areas covered by the project: (1) return migration; (2) remittances; (3) and the highly-skilled in Afghanistan, Burundi, Ethiopia, Morocco and the Netherlands. In the run-up to the final conference we will also be holding civil society days in the Hague. |

Registration Open: Civil Society Days targeted at Diaspora Organizations In the run-up to the IS Academy final conference, we are holding events targeted at diaspora organizations in the Netherlands. We will run dedicated sessions to disseminate the findings for each of the four countries covered in the study as well as a session devoted to looking at the results of the surveys with these migrant groups in the Netherlands. The event will take place in The Hague, the Netherlands on 25-26 November 2013. Registration for this event is open until 1 November 2013. |

Workshop: Migrant Integration and Transnationalism in Contemporary Europe On 24-25 October, Dr. Melissa Siegel, PhD fellow Ozge Biligili and Researcher Elaine McGregor will attend the Migrant Integration and Transnationalism in Contemporary Europe workshop in Oslo. The workshop has been organized by Standing Committee IMITE of the IMISCOE network consisting of: Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), Maastricht Graduate School of Governance (MGSoG) and the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). The two-day workshop will bring together researchers from different disciplines and backgrounds. The workshop will give the opportunity to discuss the issues of migrant integration, transnationalism and return, and to get substantial feedback on working papers. |

Migration Seminars Our 2013/14 Migration Seminar Series kicked off on 18 September with a presentation from Dr. Gea Wijers, an independent consultant and employee at Erasmus University College in Rotterdam. Opening of UNU-GCM in Barcelona Dr. Melissa Siegel attended the formal opening of the new United Nations University Institute of Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM) in Barcelona on 17h September 2013 in Barcelona. We wish our colleagues in Barcelona every success and hope that the future will bring fruitful collaborations between UNU-GCM and UNU-MERIT. |

Policy Dialogue with South Korean Government at IOM-MRTC On 26 August 2013, Dr. Melissa Siegel attended a roundtable policy dialogue on migration and development with representatives of the South Korean government. Members of the Ministry of Interior/Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took part in the event which was hosted by IOM-MRTC in Seoul, South Korea. One of our new professors, Prof. Hein de Haas, attended virtually. |

Third Volkswagen Foundation Project Meeting in Tübingen On 21 July 2013, Dr. Melissa Siegel attended the third workshop of the Volkswagen Foundation project on Global Linkages and the Impact of the Financial Crisis: Policies for Sustainable Trade, Capital Flows, and Migration. The project is being carried out by a consortium of partners including the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance.. The Maastricht Graduate School of Governance is currently working on Transnationalism and Migrant Heterogeneity within this project. |
