We are delighted to announce that Dr. Carlos Cadena Gaitán, a graduate of our PhD programme, has been named Transport Secretary for the City of Medellín, Colombia.
Dr. Cadena Gaitán is a well-known transport and environmental activist. He is co-founder of La Ciudad Verde (the Green City) initiative, project coordinator of the Low Carbon City Forum, and various other artistic and cultural organisations. In recognition of his work, he received the ‘Future Sustainability Leader’ award in Oslo in June 2015, and was nominated for the ‘Inspired Leadership Award’ in London in June 2016.
The incoming Secretary will focus among others on strengthening and facilitating walking, cycling and collective transport; and to ensure the planning of a city with all the principles of universal accessibility and gender equality.
During his academic career, Dr. Cadena Gaitán has served as Academic Coordinator of the Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies (Urbam) and as Coordinator of EAFIT University’s Master’s degree in Urban and Environmental Processes. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Reinhardt University, USA, his Master’s in Public Administration from Georgia State University, USA, and a PhD from UNU-MERIT, the Netherlands.
