In October 2020, a team led by Stanford University’s John Ioannidis published an update of their ranking of the top 2% scientists in the world in the journal PLOS Biology.
High up the ranking are several researchers from Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics, with the innovation-related research at UNU-MERIT strongly represented. MERIT researchers René Kemp (also of the Maastricht Sustainability Institute) and Bart Verspagen rank in the top 0.5% of the career-spanning list, while René Belderbos (also of the Organisation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship department) and Wim Groot appear in the top 1%.
Ranking among the top 2% of scientists worldwide are Mark Bevir, Robin Cowan, Jan Fagerberg and John Hagedoorn. Meanwhile, in the list based on 2019 only, MERIT innovation researcher Pierre Mohnen also appears, alongside Anthony Arundel and Kristof de Witte.
The inclusion of these UNU-MERIT researchers illustrates the success of the long tradition of innovation research at SBE and MERIT, with Kemp and Verspagen as early-day MERIT PhD alumni. It also shows that scientific excellence and societally-engaged research can go together very well.
