Pierre Mohnen is Professorial Fellow at UNU-MERIT, Professor emeritus at Maastricht University, Associated Fellow at CIRANO (Canada), Senior Research Associate at the Technology and Management for Development Center at Oxford University and Research Fellow at ETH, Zürich.  He has an BA and MA in economics from the Catholic University of Louvain and a PhD in economics from New York University. His research deals mainly with the economics of innovation, in particular the relationship between innovation and productivity, competition and innovation, and the effectiveness of innovation policies. He also does work on innovation, social security, and institutions in relation to development.  

Before joining Maastricht University and UNU-MERIT in 2001, he was professor at the University of Quebec in Montreal. He has been visiting professor in various French universities and in Renmin University of China. He has been a member of various scientific/advisory committees (ZEW, Stifterverband für die deutsche Wissenschaft-Wissenschaftsstatistik, i4g and RISE groups at the Directorate General of Research of the European Commission, Statistics Canada, STATEQ, Conseil d’Analyse Economique, Commission nationale d’évaluation des politiques d’innovation). He has done consulting work for the OECD, the European Commission, the Inter-American Development Bank, and UNICEF.
