Wondimagegn has an MSc in Agricultural Economics and a BSc in Agribusiness from Haramaya University, Ethiopia. Prior to joining UNU-MERIT in September 2014 as a Ph.D. fellow, he has served as Graduate Assistant and later as a Lecturer and researcher at Haramaya University and as a part-time researcher for a private consultancy firm in Ethiopia. His Ph.D. research explores the effect of selected climate-smart innovations and practices on rural households’ welfare and adaptive capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Wondimagegn has been a visiting fellow at Cornell University under the Structural Transformation of African Agriculture and Rural Spaces (STAARS) fellowship with a financial support provided through the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM). His STAARS research project focuses on analyzing the complex link between climate-smart agricultural practices, adaptive capacity and poverty dynamics in Sub-Saharan Africa using the World Bank LSMS-ISA panel data.

Wondimagegn has a strong interest in applied econometrics (cross-sectional and panel data), impact evaluation and mathematical programming techniques and their applications in a wider range of economic and development problems. Wondimagegn’s research interest revolves around development economics, agricultural economics and applied microeconomics with a particular focus on areas including climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable agriculture and structural transformation, food and nutrition security, poverty dynamics, agricultural innovations and social networks, households' decision-making behavior, and risk management.
