On the Universality of Music
Ramin Sadighi and Sohrab Mahdavi , Maastricht Graduate School of Governance
About the speaker
Ramin Sadighi - Born in 1967, Vienna, studied Business Administration in Tehran. A Bassist himself, Ramin founded Hermes Records in 1999 and co-founded Culture & Music bi-monthly magazine in 2004. He also writes columns for local and foreign magazines including Tehran Avenue and Songlines. Since 2003, he is also actively collaborating with the Columbia College (Chicago) on their mentoring programs for Middle Eastern musical studies. Hermes Records has been nominated once for the Grammy’s best World Music Album in 2007 (Endless Vision – Hossein Alizadeh, Jivan Gasparyan) (2007) and awarded for Music Label of the Year 2006 in Iran. Sohrab Mahdavi - runs a small city magazine (TehranAvenue.com) which tries to focus on issues that official or established media seldom do. In the various sections of TehranAvenue, or in its back alleys, the visitor will come upon a new language that is trying to push the limits of understanding and not simply stay within the confines of communication.
