About the speaker
Prof. dr. Jos Berghman (°1949, Belgian nationality) took his university degree in political and social sciences at Leuven University (1971 - Belgium), specialized in comparative social policy in the UK and wrote a Ph.D. on the Theory of Social Security (1981). He was researcher and director of the Centre for Social Policy (University of Antwerp - Belgium) (1971-1985). He was professor of social security studies at Tilburg University (Netherlands) (1985-1998) where he chaired the multidisciplinary department of Social Security Studies, presided the board of IVA, the Tilburg institute for social contract research, and was in office as dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Currently (1998-) he is ordinary professor of social policy at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Leuven University and chairs the Centre for Sociological Research. He directs the international postgraduate 'Impalla' programme on social policy analysis. He is president of the European Institute of Social Security and chaired the tripartite Supervisory Board of the Belgian Social Security System. He is member of editorial boards of several international journals on social (security) policy and of scientific award committees. His main research interests are comparative and European social security, social exclusion, social cohesion policies and social security policy information. He has been an advisor to the Commission of the EU (DG Social Affairs and Eurostat) and member of observatories of DG Social Affairs on minimum protection, social exclusion and the convergence of social protection policies; advisor to a.o. the Dutch, Luxembourg, Greek and Belgian governments and to the Council of Europe; chairman of the supervisory commission of the research programme on the Reform of the Dutch social security system and member of the Lisbon Agenda Group.
