Economic Fitness and Complexity, technological capabilities and green opportunities

Angelica Sbardella , Enrico Fermi Research Center
The fight against climate change at an unprecedented critical phase and the transition towards a more sustainable and fairer socio-economic system is a top policy priority. The study of the multifaceted nature of such a societal transformation, wherein geographical and structural elements interact, calls for a complexity perspective. To this end, by coupling the geography of productive and technological capabilities and focusing on different sources of geographical asymmetries in facing the transition, we take an approach that cross-fertilises between sustainability studies, evolutionary economic geography, and economic complexity. This talk will provide an overview of the application of the Economic Fitness and Complexity framework to the study of the productive and technological capabilities needed by regions/countries to develop new green technologies and jumpstart the transition, focusing on the green “readiness” of national/regional knowledge bases and its relation to income inequality, on the interaction between non-green and green know-how, and the critical raw material incidence in new green technologies.
