Catching up and global value chains in times of transformation - Final CatChain Symposium

UNU-MERIT Maastricht (Netherlands),
The world economy is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by digitalization, the green transition, and other factors. This is creating new challenges and opportunities for latecomer countries, but also risks and vulnerabilities. This symposium will discuss research on the challenges and opportunities facing latecomer countries to catch up in the years of green and digital transformations. It will also explore the implications for the design of policies and strategies to support catching up processes within a framework of digital and sustainability transitions. Specific topics of interest of the symposium include:
- The interaction between the greening and digitalization of GVCs, and the challenges and opportunities for latecomer countries in this twin transition.
- The implications of the green transition for the demand for extractive resources, and the role that latecomer countries with abundant extractive resources could play in this transition.
- The key design elements of effective green industrial policies, and how these policies can support the greening of GVCs and latecomer development.
- How latecomer countries can identify and seize green windows of opportunity in GVCs, and the necessary conditions and factors for these opportunities to emerge and be exploited.
- The implications of the green transition for labour markets and social welfare in latecomer countries, and the policy implications for employment and skill building, as well as for supporting workers and communities that are negatively affected by the green transition.
