World Water Day - Urban Sustainability: How can cities tackle floods?

Prof. Dr. Jo Ritzen (UNU-MERIT), Patrick van der Broeck (Waterschap Limburg), Muhammad Taher (Research and Evaluation Specialist) and others,
Event co-organised by UNU-MERIT & Friend In Need India Trust (FIN).
Context:
Floods inflict high socio-economic costs on communities and individuals. In the past two decades, floods have affected over 2 billion people worldwide. Floods cause accidents, deaths and damage to property, private and public spaces. There is extensive ongoing work by scholars, practitioners and policy makers on how increased flooding risks can be handled. However, every city is distinct and there are many ways to address city flooding. Presently, our recognition of the dangers is still not matched by a clear understanding of the possible pathways to develop urban flooding resilience.
Objective:
The purpose of this conference is to facilitate a conversation between planners, youth, scholars and citizens for better understanding of the drivers of urban flooding and the changes we need to bring about to build resilience. We hope that this webinar will throw light on questions such as the following: What’s happening in cities today? How are threats perceived and measured? How is resilience measured? What is the role of policy, technology, innovation, new infrastructure and community engagement in developing resilience? How are the strategies of resilience building of emerging countries like India, Bangladesh and Ghana different from those of high-income regions like Europe – given their resources and institutional capabilities constraints? How do planners integrate the Sendai framework of SDG 11 in national plans? How can social scientists contribute to increasing flood resilience capabilities?
