The early 20th century not only marks the production of more novel technologies, but also a profound transformation in the United States innovation system. From the level of individual inventors, to the rise and coordination of teamwork and shifts in the geography of invention.

Using historical records on the universe of inventors and research laboratories, matched to decennial census records between 1850 and 1940, Frank Nefke's research show how US invention evolved from being based on craftsmanship to becoming a science-based endeavor.
