Public Sector Innovation Portfolios: Exploring and understanding your own

Mrs. Angela Hanson, OECD Observatory of Public Sector Innovation

Innovation is an uncertain investment. There is no guarantee that any single innovation will work, how it will work, or what the unintended or unanticipated consequences might be. In an uncertain world, it is dangerous to rely too heavily on any one single strategy or approach, as a change in circumstances means that a promising or dependable approach can suddenly become unreliable or unsuited.

The OECD Observatory of Public Sector Innovation (OPSI) has developed a tool to explore and assess the balance of innovation activities – innovation portfolios – undertaken by civil servants, leaders, and decision-makers. This session will introduce the Portfolio Exploration Tool and provide examples of innovation portfolio management.
