Technology in the Asian Miracle and Debacle Debates: Applications of and Insights from the Field of Influence Approach to Input-Output Analysis

Norman Dytianquin, SBE

The thesis is about the use of a new technique in input-output analysis called field of influence approach to test for technological change as determinant of growth in the three Asian countries of Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines where the debate on the miracle story plays around accumulation of inputs versus assimilation of technology as the cause of growth. The same approach is also used to test for the possibility of technology as an impulse to the Asian crisis of 1997 in line with real business cycle theory as the debate on the origins of the crisis between structuralist versus contagion views are both predominantly monetary or financial in nature. This is done using the semiconductor industry under the new development paradigm called global production networks.
