The Transformation of Huawei

Prof. Can Huang, Zhejiang University

This presentation is about a forthcoming book titled "The Transformation of Huawei" to be published by Cambridge University Press. The School of Management, Zhejiang University has established the Ruihua Institute for Innovation Management with Huawei Technologies in July 2014. The mission of the Institute is to research the growth and development of the Huawei company, document and theorize the management practice in it and contribute to the existing research on the management in Chinese companies. We have organized a Forum in collaboration with the retired Huawei executives to discuss the management issues in the company every season since Winter 2014. As the research progressed, it became clear that at the center of Huawei’s success lies in the organizational capability to continuously transform itself. "The Transformation of Huawei" is focused on the transformation Huawei has been through since it started in 1987, and documents how and why Huawei has been able to grow from a small company with registered capital of USD 5,600 in 1987 to a global leading ICT solutions provider with revenue of more than USD 105 billion and 188,000 employees in 2018, outcompeting so many domestic and international rivals.
