Migrant subjectivities and crisis narratives in the Euro-Mediterranean region

The mobility regime of the European Union is currently undergoing a lengthy crisis and a range of alternative policy responses have been implemented or articulated. This paper draws on recent research in Morocco and in North East Africa, to present examples of different subjectivations of undocumented migrants. It then turns to a consideration of EU policy responses. The paper argues that policy responses both result from and contribute to how migrants are seen as subjects of mobility regimes.

About the speaker
Michael Collyer is Reader in Geography at the University of Sussex. He has held visiting positions at Universities in Egypt, France, Morocco, Sri Lanka and the USA. He is a political geographer with an interest in the relationship between people on the move and state institutions, particularly when that relationship is problematic, such as the situation of refugees or undocumented migrants.
