Researcher

Research group(s):
1. Economics of Knowledge and Innovation
4. Governance and institutions

Dr. Micheline Goedhuys is a senior research fellow at the United Nations University (UNU-MERIT) in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Micheline is an expert on empowerment, entrepreneurship, innovation, SME development and growth in the MENA region and Sub-Sahara Africa and on impact evaluation of interventions in this area. She has published in various high-ranked internationally peer reviewed journals including the Journal of Development Economics and World Development. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Leuven in Belgium and has held previous positions at the ILO in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania and at the Institute of Development Policy and Management, University of Antwerp, Belgium.

Her research interest focuses on entrepreneurship, innovation and firm performance in developing countries and on how institutions moderate these relationships.  She uses econometric techniques applied to micro data to investigate how innovation activity and standards, but also systemic failures, resource constraints and corruption, affect (high-) growth of firms, productivity, exports and employment creation.  She published widely on these topics and co-edited three special issues, in the European Journal of Development Research (2008), Structural Change and Economic Dynamics (2012) and Eurasian Business Review (2016).

She also works on a number of research projects related to employment, empowerment and aspirations of women and youth in Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia.  She coordinates an ILO-funded research project on 'Youth Aspirations and the World of Work' which will feed into the ILO Global Commission on the Future of Work; she is involved in an AFD-funded study to evaluate the impact of the Tunisian Ministry of Public Works' programme to upgrade infrastructure and facilities in disadvantaged neigborhoods (Programme de Réhabilitation et d'Intégration des Quartiers d'Habitation Phase 2) financed by the Tunisian government, AFD, the EU and the EIB.  Last year she coordinated an IFAD-funded study to measure empowerment in Tunisia as part of the ILO Taqeem Initiative; she developed the impact evaluation of an intervention to counter violent extremism in a Tunisian prison in collaboration with IIDebate, and provided expertise to the development of an impact evaluation agenda with the Tunisian Ministry of Women and the Center of Arab Women for Training and Research (CAWTAR).
