Caio Torres Mazzi joined UNU-MERIT in September 2016, where he obtained his PhD degree in 2021. Previously, he worked at the National Innovation Agency of Brazil (Finep), where he coordinated national programs to promote innovation in the private sector. He has also acted as a consultant for international organizations and national governments in research projects related to innovation policy and private sector development, such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), The World Bank (WBG), UNU-WIDER and the government of South Africa.

His research focuses on the role of innovation, international trade, and Global Value Chains (GVCs) for economic development, as well as the impact of innovation policy on firm performance and regional development. Recently published work has considered the impact of GVC participation and GVC governance on firm performance in developing countries, and the relationship between trade and firms’ technological capabilities.
