Jemal is a PhD fellow at UNU-MERIT.  He earned his BA degree in Economics (great distinction) from Haramaya University, Ethiopia in 2007 and Master’s degree in Development Economics from Adama Science and Technology University, Ethiopia in 2011.  Before joining UNU-MERIT, he worked as lecturer and researcher at Haramaya University, where he taught Economics courses for undergraduate students and was involved in several research projects.

The focus of his PhD thesis is on the impact of exposure to climate shock on the evolution of preferences and human capital formation in low-income countries.

His research interests cover development economics, behavioural economics, institutional change, human capital formation and innovation in developing countries.
