Dr. Mulu Gebreeyesus

An Ethiopian national, Dr. Mulu Gebreeyesus Gebreyohannes joined UNU-MERIT on 1 June 2008.  He was previously Research Fellow and Head of Poverty and Sectoral Development Directorate at the Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI). He holds a PhD in Economics from the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Dr. Gebreeyesus' current research interest is on development of non-traditional export activities, trade orientation and firm performance, and innovation in the informal sector with a focus on developing countries. He has extensively studied particularly the performance of the Ethiopian manufacturing industry addressing such issue as firm entry-exit, agglomeration, export participation, and trade liberalization using a large panel data set.

Some of his recent and ongoing research projects include:

  • Discovery and sustainability of non-traditional exports in developing countries; cases including flower (Ethiopian, Colombia and Ecuador), Salmon (Chile), Blueberry (Chile and Argentina), Mango (Colombia and Ecuador)

  • Analysis of the impact of the end of Multifiber Arrangement (MFA) quota on global clothing export flow    

  • Innovation and business performance in the informal sector

  • Learning to Compete (L2C): Accelerating Industrial Development in Africa  working as a principal investigator for the Ethiopian country team
