It is with deep sadness that we bring you the news that our colleague and friend Ibrahima Sory Kaba passed away on 1 September 2020, at the age of 32. Ibrahima started at UNU-MERIT as a PhD fellow, and completed his PhD thesis entitled ‘Aggregate Fluctuations and Development: Essays on Macroeconomic Volatility and Economic Growth’ in 2019. After his period as PhD fellow, he took up a teaching position at UNU-MERIT’s sister department, MILE, at Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics.
Ibrahima was born in Koundara in the Republic of Guinea. He was set for an academic career when, after ranking third nationally in his Baccalauréat exams, he won a government scholarship to pursue his studies abroad. He then graduated (BSc. in Econometrics) cum laude from University Hassan 1 in Morocco, and later from Toulouse 1 University in France (MSc. in Economics and Statistics). When he came to Maastricht in 2013, he immediately showed his talent, both in class and in developing his proposal. He chose a difficult and technical topic for his thesis, and his hard work was only interrupted when treatment of his illness, which had revealed itself while in Maastricht, so required.
When he engaged with students, he was appreciated for his knowledge and all the effort he put in. Even during the last days, he was concerned about the courses he was planning to teach, but could not. In this way, he was truly an all-round academic, teacher and researcher with a strong dedication to both roles.
In addition to his academic achievements, Ibrahima was a beautiful and warm human soul, and he played a central role in the community at our Institute and its environment. He showed himself to be a leader in times of sorrow, especially so in the community of PhD fellows. He was also a deeply religious person, and for him, his faith was a way to improve the world and the lives of others. He was admired by all who knew him for the way he lived his life, in service of his community, whether in Maastricht or back home in Guinea, Africa.
Ibrahima will be missed very much, and losing him will be difficult to bear. May he be an inspiration to those he leaves behind, both to his family and his many friends alike.
