Spatial Industrial Complexes: Accessibility, Fuzzy Logic Approach and Regional Policies

Rodrigo SIMÕES, Centre for Economic and Regional Development (Cedeplar) at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil

This paper, recovering the concepts of economic poles and industrial
complexes in space, presents a multi-sectoral analysis of industrial
location by building up a methodological proposal of spatial interpretation
of input-output matrices. Using the elements of a Spatial Accessibility
Matrix – SpAM (SIMÕES, 2004), we applied a multivariate classification
method (Fuzzy-Set Clustering) to identify spatial industrial complexes for the economy of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro States, Brazil. The results
could help formulate policies for the regional thickening of productive
chains and even, the eligibility of sectors for granting fiscal incentives.
