On reputation, leadership and communities of practice

Paul Muller, University Louis Pasteur, Bureau d'Economie Théorique et Appliquée, Strasbourg:

The aim of this contribution is to propose a theoretical framework describing the internal organization of Communities of Practice in a dynamic perspective. More precisely, we argue that Communities of Practice adopt some specific pattern of internal organization where some members acquire a specific Leadership status. Those leaders acquire their specific status through a process of reputation accrual within the Community. We then apply this theoretical framework to propose a simulation model describing the dynamic process of leadership emergence as the outcome of the accumulation of individual decision taken by Community Members.
