Alliance Design and Knowledge Transfer in Interfirm R&D Relationships: The Moderating Role of Partner-Specific Experience
Prof. John Hagedoorn,
Prior studies show how partner-specific experience, that is, the history of prior alliances between two partner firms, influences alliance design. Little is known instead about the efficacy of alliance design as a function of partner-specific experience. We begin to address this issue by examining how partner-specific experience moderates the relation of alliance design to knowledge transfer in interfirm R&D relationships. We focus on two aspects of alliance design, governance and collaborative scope, the consequences of the latter which have remained unstudied to date. We propose that partner-specific experience improves knowledge transfer in nonequity and broad-scope relative to equity-based and narrow-scope relationships. We find support for our predictions in an analysis of longitudinal data on domestic interfirm R&D relationships in the U.S. information technology industry.
