Cloud Computing
Sachin Badkas, UNU-MERIT / School of Governance
Data is getting bigger and the questions we ask of it, thornier. Anecdotally (from coffee-corner humblebrags) it would appear our personal computers are proving unequal to the demands we make of them. This is a brief information session on solutions/alternatives. It will offer pointers to cloud-computing resources, present academic use cases and information on the typical costs, which can be negligibly low at least on the monetary side. At most though, the seminar might save you a few days of searching for services because a colleague recently has, or it might make you reconsider research questions that had seemed prohibitively daunting. To be clear, it is not a seminar on mere Cloud Storage (which is potentially a bad idea for some kinds of data), but on Cloud Computing - carrying out your data analysis on a much more powerful computer online. Nor is it on sources of Big Data or to learn applicable techniques. (If there is any demand, there might be a separate session on deploying bots/APIs to gather data for you while you and your machine rest or are otherwise occupied, with free open tools that do not require [much] programming skill.)
No registration is required for this Seminar. We hope to see you there!
