Alumnus and affiliated researcher Dr. Carlos Cadena Gaitán is one of seven emerging leaders worldwide shortlisted for the ‘Inspired Leadership Award 2016’. The award will be presented at ‘The Performance Theatre’ – featuring 150 global CEOs and change-makers from across business, policy and civil society – in London, UK on 17-18 June 2016.
Dr. Carlos Cadena Gaitán is the co-founder of La Ciudad Verde, a Colombian activist think tank that promotes sustainable cities through citizen participation and creativity. La Ciudad Verde uses social media and art as a tool to take academic knowledge on sustainability to citizens. They have mobilised more than 100,000 citizens in Colombia through global campaigns such as BikesForLife, which covered almost 200 cities in 2013. He also coordinates the World Bicycle Forum, which gathers citizens, advocates, researchers, administrators, policymakers, and artists, among others, to think about how urban cycling can become a serious form of urban transport and help to build better ‘Cities for All’.
What makes a great leader?
The Inspired Leadership Award recognises individuals whose personal leadership has generated more sustainable and socially responsible business practices, elevated ethical standards in business, and set an example for other organisations and individuals to emulate.
The award was founded in 2006 and is traditionally presented at The Performance Theatre (TPT) each year. In past years, the award has celebrated global business pioneers who embody our ideal of what a leader should be. Starting 2015, it is awarded to emerging leaders who have shown that they have the potential to achieve positive change on a global scale.
In its new form, the prize represents a fantastic opportunity for the recipient: not only will they join a list of awardees that includes leaders from Ratan Tata to Richard Branson, but they will also be mentored by senior business leaders from the TPT community. The award criteria include:
- A purpose-driven leader who is striving to create value for both their organisations and society at large.
- An individual who is breaking away from the status quo, anticipating and driving change rather than waiting for it.
- An outstanding performer who has the potential to achieve positive change on a global scale.
