Dr. Abdul Baseer Qazi joined the PhD stream "The Economics and Policy Studies of Technical Change" in fall of 2007. His PhD thesis analyzes various knowledge flows, particularly those from FDI in the ICT sector of Pakistan. He has employed both regression analysis and the network approach for establishing the impact of absorptive capacity, labor mobility and demonstration effects on innovativeness and productivity at firm level. Given the enormous importance of ICT as an engine of growth, and the growing influence of MNCs, his study benefits policy makers and academicians in understanding how the MNC-Host economy nexus can be turned into a win-win relationship in developing economies for not only transferring state of the art technologies, but also catching up with developed nations. Dr. Qazi on his return from the Netherlands in 2011, joined Capital University of Science and Technology in the capital city Islamabad as an Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for MS Engineering Management. He also served as the founding director of the Volunteers in Service department at CUST. Currently he is a Senior Assistant Professor at Software Engineering Department, Bahria University, Islamabad. His teaching interests include Engineering Management, Engineering Economics, Leadership, Ethics, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Academics: Even before his PhD, Dr. Qazi has a diverse academic background, with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (cum laude) from the NWFP UET in Peshawar and a dual Master's degree from the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg in Information and Communication Systems and in Technology Management (cum laude) from the Northern Institute of Technology. He also holds a 1-year diploma in Computer Sciences (cum laude) from the NWFP Board of Technical Education

Scholarships: Dr. Qazi has been receiving scholarships and stipends throughout his professional education as a result of his outstanding academic performance. He received a stipend from the local government for his 4 years engineering degree. His studies at the TUHH/NITHH were fully sponsored by Siemens. He was also part of the prestigious Siemens Student Program during this period which in addition to bearing the tuition fee not only provided him with a stipend and on-campus accommodation, but also arranged and paid for various EU-wide seminars, trainings and events. The Pakistani education ministry nominated him for a Common Wealth doctoral scholarship to study in the UK, based on his performance in a nationwide GRE-type test where he achieved a 99 percentile score. His doctoral fellowship at the UNU-MERIT was also fully sponsored.

Academic and Industry Experience: Dr. Qazi got his first job exposure while working as a research assistant in the German Aerospace Center near Munich, Germany on the European GPS project 'Galileo' in 1999. Afterwards, he had the unique opportunity of working for four Fortune 500 companies, IBMSiemens, NXP Semiconductors and Philips in Germany and the Netherlands. In his last assignment as Program Manager at Philips Medical Systems he was responsible for the Medical-IT division for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Previously he has also taught at Muhammad Ali Jinnah UniversityCECOS University, Peshawar College of EngineeringUET Peshawar and BRAINS Degree College.

Entrepreneurial activities: Dr. Qazi has successfully ventured several startup firms during his studies and also while working. PrintWorks was a desktop publishing and printing services firm which he co-founded and ran during 1994-97. Cosmo Computer Works, a hardware sales and services company which he co-founded in 1997 is still operational. KTC-International, co-founded in 2005, was an Import/Export venture which imported customized MP4 players/digital cameras from China for the German market and exported used IT equipment to Pakistan. KTC also explored trading opportunities of Sri Lankan tea together with Meezan Group of Industries. Dr. Qazi's commitment to development studies only further resolved after his firsthand interaction with poor communities in China and Sri Lanka while on business visits. Another venture, BrickWorks a construction firm which was active in the housing sector of Islamabad and Peshawar. Currently he’s working on a crowd-sourced business review portal for Pakistan, BestInPK.

Training Experience: During his career, both as part of the various MNCs and as an instructor at various universities, he has attended and delivered a huge number of trainings both domestically and internationally in countries including the US, UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, Sri Lanka, China, UAE and Pakistan.
