Dr. Önder Nomaler

Researcher

Research group(s):
1. Economics of Knowledge and Innovation
2. Structural Change and Economic Development
3. Economic Complexity and Innovation

Önder Nomaler holds a BSc degree in Industrial Engineering and an MSc degree in Economics, both obtained at Middle East Technical University (METU) in Turkey, and a PhD, also in Economics, earned at Maastricht University. Before joining UNU-MERIT in February 2019, he worked for about 17 years at the Industrial Engineering /Innovation Sciences Department of Eindhoven University of Technology in various positions, ranging from researcher to Assistant Professor.

He has a broad range of research interests in topics within and across areas such as (sustainable) economic growth, economics/geography of knowledge and innovation, international trade, structural change, input-output economics, evolutionary economics and economic complexity.  Methods-wise, his experience includes bibliometric analysis (especially with patent citations), statistical analysis (also machine learning and data mining), and mathematical modeling, especially in Agent-Based dynamic simulation models.

Önder worked for various projects commissioned by the European Commission (e.g., the EU PatVal study), UNIDO, European Patent Office, the Asian Development Bank, and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL).

Recent published research has considered, among others, the impact of the creation and the adoption of new technologies (e.g., IR 4.0) on economic growth and the labor market (job automation risk and the skills-based wage gap), the reconciliation of the respective Keynesian and the Schumpeterian approaches to economic stability and growth, and the patterns of the national and technological diversity underlying the creation of new technologies for mitigation or adoption against climate change (i.e., Green-tech).

Research reports
Verspagen, Bart, Neil Foster-McGregor & Önder Nomaler, 2021, The Greater Mekong Subregion 2030 and Beyond: Integration, Upgrading, Cities and Connectivity, While the six member countries have made impressive gains in recent decades, much remains to be done to close the gap with the world’s most advanced economies. The GMS needs to further integrate into the global economy, significantly upgrade production and exports, enable cities to be engines of growth, and improve the quality of road infrastructure and connectivity
