Dr. Daniel Vertesy

Daniel Vertesy is an economist at the International Telecommunication Union, and affiliated researcher at UNU-MERIT. Prior to joining the ICT Data and Analytics division of the Telecom Development Bureau of ITU, he was coordinating research at the Joint Research Center of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy, covering topics such as the development and analysis of indicator frameworks to measure territorial performance in science, technology and innovation, as well as the employment impacts of innovation, most recently, of AI and robotics. He has collaborated with a wide range of international organizations (EU institutions and UN specialized agencies) on developing indicator frameworks and conducting sensitivity and robustness analyses.

His research at UNU-MERIT focused on sectoral innovation system dynamics in latecomer aerospace industry, under the supervision of Prof. Eddy Szirmai. Daniel is an alumni of the UNU-MERIT PhD Programme "Innovation Studies and Development", which he joined in 2006. He graduated at the Corvinus University of Budapest in International Studies (2005), where he also joined the PhD Programme in International Relations at the Department for World Economy. He participated in various doctoral training programmes, including DIMETIC at Beta in Strasbourg, Maastricht and Pécs, the Central European University in Budapest and the Globelics Academy at ISEG/UTL in Lisbon. He has taught Master and Bachelor level courses at the Corvinus University of Budapest and Maastricht University, and has experience in problem based learning.

His research has been published in journals including Research Policy, Science and Public Policy, Eurasian Business Review, and Economics of Innovation and New Technology, Routledge and Springer handbooks, as well as in reports of the European Commission and UN specialized agencies (e.g., ITU, UNIDO, WIPO).
