6. Migration and Development

Zoë Ogahara is a researcher for the Migration Research Group at UNU-MERIT. She holds an MSc in Public Policy and Human Development from Maastricht University/ UNU-MERIT with a specialisation in Migration Studies. Her thesis explored mechanisms of multi-level governance in the context of the provision of non-formal education by NGOs and palm oil businesses for the children of migrant workers in East Malaysia. She has continued to examine the responsibilities and responses of multinational companies towards local communities through research on mining in different African states. Since joining UNU-MERIT in November 2018, she has undertaken research exploring the relationships between development and migration aspirations in Sierra Leone and Ethiopia. Zoë holds a first-class BA in English Literature and History from the University of Durham and an MPhil in Modern European History from the University of Cambridge. She also trained as a secondary school mathematics teacher with Teach First UK.
