Prof. Dr. René Kemp

Professorial Fellow

Research group(s):
5. Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainability Transitions (coordinator)

René Kemp is Professorial fellow at UNU-MERIT and Professor of Innovation and Sustainable Development at MSI, Maastricht University. Formerly he was research director of STEP in Oslo and visiting researcher at IPTS (Seville), Harvard (Boston), Foscari University (Venice), SPRU (Sussex), CIRUS (Zurich), France Telecom (Paris) and the AIRC (Hobart). He held research positions at DRIFT, TNO and Twente University. René Kemp is an acclaimed expert on eco-innovation, environmental policy, sustainability transitions, reflexive governance– on which he authored seminal articles and books. New research interests are the circular economy, urban labs, social innovation and the humanisation of the economy.

With an h-index of 70 he belongs to the top 0.2% researchers in the world in the field of environmental sciences. He is advisory editor of Research Policy, editor of Sustainability Science and editor of Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions (top journals in the fields of innovation studies, sustainability science and transition studies). He is engaged in many societal impact activities: briefs, blogs and invited talks in the Netherlands and abroad.  For the Inno4SD network he led the work on measuring eco-innovation for a green economy and acted as principal investigator. He served as advisory board member of the Eco-Innovation Observatory (2010 - 2014) and presently serves as member of the working group "Understanding and Managing Industrial Transitions" of the European Commission. At Maastricht University, he co-leads the Maastricht Observatory on Resilient, Responsible & Sustainable Enterprise and Economy (MORSE) and theme 5 at UNU-MERIT: Innovation and enterpreneurship for sustainability transitions.

He agrees with Lewis Mumford that "the true reward of labor is in life-wages: self-education, self-expression, self-government; mastery and satisfaction in the job, not comfort and luxuries as a relief from the job" (Mumford Interpretations and Forecasts: 1922-1972, p. 206). Good research goes beyond the application of a predefined theory and shuns reductionism: When reductionism becomes the only way of thinking, we reduce too much – Julian Baggini in How the World Thinks, p. 166.

He mainly works as a researcher, but teaches a course on innovation for sustainability at the Master level and causality anlaysis at PhD level. As a critical pluralist, he undertakes multi-method anlaysis in appropriate multidisciplinary frameworks.

Kemp, René & Joost van Haaften, 2020, The 4B’s: Follow Bauhaus to build back a better world, Looking to the post-pandemic future, we explain how a design-based approach known as ‘Bauhaus’ can be used to build back something truly better: starting with a socially stronger and fairer Europe combined with a low-carbon economy. Here we mean two things by the word ‘design’. First, a practice of designers for aesthetic products that last a long time. Second, social design as a partnership for multiple value creation, i.e. design for people by people. City authorities, planners, architects, students, investors, cooperatives and partnerships for multiple value creation will be key actors in this transformative programme, More information

Learning about systemic relations and strategies for transformative change, This 4th TRANSIT brief offers insights into the following questions: what is social learning, what does it consist of in the case of SI initiatives, and why is social learning important – even foundational – for SI initiatives as well as wider society? Also, the brief provides insight into the role of networks in social learning for social innovation
Haxeltine, Alex, René Kemp, S Cozan, S Ruijsink, J Backhaus, F. Avelino & A Dumitru, 2016, How Social Innovation Leads to Transformative Change. Towards a theory of transformative social innovation, In this brief we present a summary of our current understanding of transformative social innovation, and finally we share seven insights about the practice of transformative social innovation that follow from this understanding
Kemp, René, Marc Dijk, J Backhaus & M Kammerlander, 2016, Constraints to Resource-Efficient Consumer Behaviour, The brief presents the findings of the POLFREE survey under 1217 in the Netherlands, Austria and Hungary which are that: o Despite the resource dimension having a low salience amongst consumers, we find that many people are interested in pursuing resouce-efficient practices. o People are not making consistent choices for resource efficiency. o Resource consumption patterns are influenced by numerous factors that interact with each other: the availability of products, services and infrastructures, social norms and personal factors (values, preferences, attitudes, experiences, knowledge, location of work and home). o A large majority of people support the policy goals of resource efficiency and energy efficiency and express support for regulations towards such ends.
Dijk, M., René Kemp & T Domenech, 2016, Understanding the Web of Constraints on Resource Efficiency in Europe – Lessons for Policy, The concept of resource efficiency (RE) and circular economy has attracted the attention of policy makers and businesses in recent years. However, changing current patterns of resource use is a complex task. Based on the research within the POLFREE project, the authors propose to move from the concept of ‘barrier’ to resource efficiency, that seems to point to some concrete single factor that impedes more optimal use of resources, to the notion of ‘web of constraints’, that highlights the complex web of interlinked factors that interact with each other dynamically and simultaneously
