6. Migration and Development

Julia Reinold (MSc) is a PhD Candidate at Maastricht University's Institute for Transnational and Euregional Cross border cooperation and Mobility / ITEM and part of the Migration Group at UNU-MERIT. The goal of her PhD project is to better understand the decision-making factors of international highly-skilled migrants in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine with regard to arrival, staying or leaving the region. In particular, the project focuses on perceived advantages or disadvantages of living in a border region. The outcomes from the project will enable policy-makers in the region to employ policies to better attract and retain highly-skilled international migrants in the region.

Prior to starting her PhD project with ITEM, she worked as a research officer for the Migration Group. In this position she contributed to various research projects commissioned for instance by European Union Institutions, International Organisations (UNDP, ICMPD, ILO) and Development Organisations (GIZ, DFID) using both qualitative and quantitative methods. In addition, she has experience in writing research funding proposals. Julia finished both her Bachelor degree in European Studies and her Master degree in Public Policy and Human Development with a specialization in Regional Integration and Multi-Level Governance at Maastricht University. Her Master’s thesis examined the migration intentions of university graduates in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.
