Arip Muttaqien was born in Madiun (Indonesia). He graduated from Industrial Engineering at the University of Indonesia (2007), master’s degree (maîtrise) in Economics at Toulouse School of Economics (2010), and MSc in Public Policy and Human Development (MPP) at Maastricht University (2014). He was the runner-up of the most outstanding student competition at the University of Indonesia (2007); then he received the Eiffel Scholarship (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France) to study in Toulouse. Before coming to Maastricht, he worked in various sectors (private sector, government sector, NGO, and academic). 

Arip joined the PhD program at Maastricht Graduate School of Governance after graduated from MPP in 2014. His studies were funded by Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education (Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan/LPDP) through the Master-PhD direct scheme, managed by the Ministry of Finance of Indonesia. He was the coordinator of LPDP recipients in the Netherlands. During his PhD, he had opportunities to conduct visiting research at Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) and the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER).

Arip graduated as PhD on 24 January 2019. Currently, he works as a Senior Officer at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta.
