Hugo Confraria is a PhD fellow at UNU-MERIT since September 2014. He holds a bachelor degree in Economics (University of Coimbra) and a master degree in Economics and Management of Science, Technology and Innovation (University of Lisbon).

Hugo has previous working experience in knowledge transfer, research management and bibliometrics. At UNU-MERIT he has been tutoring Data Science, Econometrics and Science, Technology and Innovation Policy at the master level. At Maastricht University he has been tutoring Macroeconomics at the bachelor level. He also co-coordinated the Joint UNU-MERIT/School of Governance Seminars between 2015 and 2017.

His PhD thesis aims to improve understanding on the causes and consequences of scientific development in low & middle-income countries. The thesis is supervised by Prof. Dr. Bart Verspagen, Prof. Dr. Robin Cowan and Dr. Lili Wang. In his research he mainly uses econometric, bibliometric and network analysis techniques.
