Tigist Mekonnen Melesse has obtained a Ph.D. from UNU-MERIT Maastricht University in December 2016. Tigist has been involved in teaching at higher institutions such as Maastricht University, the Netherlands and Jimma University, Ethiopia. She also worked as a research assistant for the FINISH-INK (Financial Inclusion Improves Sanitation and Health in India and Kenya) project, where UNU-MERIT is tasked with its impact assessment. Tigist's main research area is agriculture, poverty analysis and impact evaluation of development programs and policies. Using large household surveys from the World Bank and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), she has been working on projects, agricultural technologies, innovation practices, marketing, agricultural finance, household welfare, agricultural risk insurance linking with issues on climate change and food security. Applying econometric and impact evaluation techniques on cross-sectional and panel datasets, her rigorous research work contributed to the development economics literature as well as the methodology. The policy implications of her research findings are numerous, especially in developing countries where agriculture is the main economic driver. Searching novel ways to boost agricultural productivity help countries not relying on food aid. Tigist presents her papers at national and international conferences including the 13th Globelics in Havana, Cuba and the Center for the Study of African Economics (CSAE), University of Oxford, UK. Currently, Tigist is a researcher at UNU-MERIT, Maastricht, the Netherlands.
