Innovation capacity for New Agriculture: A case study of response capacities to cope with evolving markets, norms and standards in the livestock sector in Kenya and Ethiopia

theme Theme 3: Knowledge and industrial dynamics
time frame 2004-2006
researcher(s) Andy Hall
Ekin Keskin
description This study, conducted in collaboration with FAO and ILRI, is exploring aspects of innovation capacity through a study of the livestock export sector in East Africa. Growing domestic and international demand for livestock products offers potentially important ways of reducing poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, these markets are characterised by changing and strong patterns of competition, and constantly changing trade norms and standards – sanitary and phyto-sanitary and animal welfare standards and certification. The study explores how response capacity to cope with these changes could be strengthened in ways that both enable producers to innovate and at the same time safe guards the livelihoods of poor people linked with the sector.
