Long Distance and Local Linkages: Their Impact on Learning and Innovation in Information Technology and Biotechnology Firms

theme Theme 3: Knowledge and industrial dynamics
time frame 2000-2002
researcher(s) Lynn K. Mytelka
description The project undertook a comparative analysis of the local and long distance linkages of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a view to analysing the extent to which these are complementary or substitutable. Face-to-face interviews with 50 firms - 25 from the ICT and 25 from the biotechnology sectors - were conducted. The firms are located in clusters in or near to the cities of Strasbourg, Grenoble, Nimes, Montpellier, Toulouse and Marseille in France.
deliverables "Clustering, Long Distance Partnerships and the SME: A Study of the French Biotechnology Sector" presented at the Fourth Annual Meeting of the Innovation Systems Research Network (ISRN), Quebec City, 9-10 May 2002. This paper is to be published in the International Journal of Technology Management (forthcoming 2003). A paper comparing biotechnology and ICT sector firms was due to be published in late 2003
