Dear colleagues,

We have pleasure in announcing a call for papers by the World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University (UNU−WIDER). (Apologies for any cross−posting.)

Details can be found at: http://www.wider.unu.edu

Call for papers

WIDER−MERIT Research Workshop

Entrepreneurship, Technological Innovation, and Development

30−31 October 2008

UNU−MERIT

Maastricht, The Netherlands

Entrepreneurship can make an important contribution to development by providing technologies that improve people’s productivity and living standards. While the role of entrepreneurship in technological innovation has been widely studied in the context of advanced economies, less is known about entrepreneurship in developing economies. Of particular interest is the role of entrepreneurs in the quantity, quality, commercialization, and adoption of technological innovations in developing countries, and the implications thereof for economic growth, trade, poverty, and inequality. This joint workshop by the United Nations University (UNU) World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU−WIDER) and Maastricht Economic and social Research and training centre on Innovation and Technology (UNU−MERIT) is intended as a platform for the discussion and promotion of research in this regard.

Workshop topics include:

• What is the role of entrepreneurship in technological innovation and acceleration of economic growth?

• How does this role differ between developed and developing countries?

• What kinds of entrepreneurship are most crucial for successful development?

• What incentive structures exist for entrepreneurs in developing countries and how are these determined by policies, institutions, finance and expectations?

• How do entrepreneurial practices differ between developing countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa?

• How do policies, institutions, financial factors, history, and geography impact on the riskiness of technological innovation?

• Are science parks, incubators, and university support networks for entrepreneurship appropriate models to stimulate entrepreneurial innovation in developing countries?

• How can microfinance be tailored to encourage entrepreneurial technological innovation?

Papers are invited on the workshop and related topics. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 30 May 2008. Abstracts should be accompanied by a CV. All abstracts will be reviewed by a selection panel. Preference will be given to original papers since all selected papers will be considered for a special publication on the topic. Accepted papers are required by 22 September 2008. UNU−WIDER and UNU−MERIT may cover travel and accommodation costs of participants whose papers have been selected, within UN regulations. There is no registration fee.

The conference is intended for researchers from the academic, government, and development communities.

Submissions of paper abstracts before 30 May 2008: entrepreneur@wider.unu.edu, for more details www.wider.unu.edu

World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University (UNU−WIDER) was established in 1985. The institute undertakes multidisciplinary research and policy analysis on structural changes affecting the living conditions of the world's poorest people; provides a forum for professional interaction and the advocacy of policies leading to robust, equitable and environmentally sustainable growth; and promotes capacity strengthening and training for scholars and government officials in the field of economic and social policy making.

Maastricht Economic and social Research and training centre on Innovation and Technology (UNU−MERIT) is a joint research and training centre of United Nations University (UNU) and Maastricht University, the Netherlands. The joint Institute was created on 1 January 2006 following the integration of the former UNU−Institute for New Technologies (INTECH) in Maastricht, and the Maastricht Economic Research Institute on Innovation and Technology, MERIT, at Maastricht University. UNU−MERIT provides insights into the social, political and economic factors that drive technological change and innovation. The Centre's research and training programmes address a broad range of policy questions relating to the national and international governance of science, technology and innovation, with a particular focus on the creation, diffusion and access to knowledge.

Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). IIASA

Dear all,

the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) promotes young scientists within its Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP). IIASA's annual 3−month YSSP offers research opportunities to talented young researchers whose interests correspond with IIASA's ongoing research on issues of global environmental, economic and social change. Many of IIASA's National Member Organizations provide special grants to enable young scientists from their countries, or foreign students studying in their country, to participate in the program. From June through August accepted participants work within the Institute's Research Programs under the guidance of IIASA scientific staff. The YSSP provides a unique opportunity for participants to

−− advance their research under the direct supervision of an    experienced IIASA scientist, and at the same time contribute to IIASA's ongoing scientific agenda;
−− broaden their research interests by working in IIASA's interdisciplinary and international research environment;
−− build contacts with IIASA's worldwide network of collaborators and with other YSSP fellows.

More specifically, IIASA's Energy Program (ENE) is looking for YSSP applicants with a background in energy and environmental modeling, in particular focusing on one of the following topics:

−− Incorporating salient energy, economic and environmental uncertainties into energy models by means of e.g. stochastic optimization and portfolio management techniques, and assessing their implications for decision making
−− Large−scale energy modeling using linear optimization approaches for the development of systems engineering−based, long−term scenarios with focus on energy transitions in the context of climate change
−− Investigating the role of investments in research, development, deployment and diffusion of energy technologies with emphasis of integration of energy into broader policy objectives, such as access to energy in the developing world

Registration will be open until 15 January 2008.
