Our EU Trend Reports tackle innovative business practices from a policy perspective. They help policymakers better understand the latest trends in business and industry innovation and provide specific policy recommendations to unleash the potential of European businesses and scale-up successful innovative solutions in the EU. Two trend reports are published every year, drawing on case studies and conference outcomes.

The second trend report from the EU’s Business Innovation Observatory highlights several new innovation practices and explains how the right policies can scale-up success. The lead author was Dr René Wintjes.
As part of this report, three emerging trends – “Design for Innovation”, “Smart Living” and “Innovative Business Models for Global Competitiveness” – were analysed and presented in 12 case studies. The authors then gave recommendations, based on discussions with policymakers at a dedicated workshop, to foster the development of these trends and companies.
To illustrate the market potential of these trends: construction firms are expected to be 60 per cent “green” by 2015; the potential market for electricity meters in intelligent homes is around 1 billion connected devices; and Supply Chain Finance is set to grow by 30-40 per cent per year.
See the one-page summary and full report below for more details. More information can also be found on the dedicated EU website.
