Visiting Staff This month we are delighted to welcome visiting researchers Tobias Stöhr and Lisa Andersson to the school. |

Lisa Andersson is a PhD Candidate in Economics at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and a visiting researcher at the School of Governance and UNU-MERIT during the autumn and spring 2012/2013. Lisa is involved in the IS Academy project on migration and development and teaches courses in microeconomics and econometrics. |
||
Tobias Stöhr is a researcher at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Kiel, Germany, and a PhD student at the University of Kiel. He holds an MSc in Economics and Development Economics from the University of Nottingham and a BSc in Economics from the University of Mannheim. His research focuses on the economic and social effects of immigration and emigration using econometric techniques. |

New Projects and Partnerships |

Evaluation of the ILO Strategy on International Labour Migration The School of Governance has been awarded the contract to perform an evaluation of the ILO strategy on international labour migration, with a view to assessing its strategy, methodology and results and providing guidance on priorities for the future. This evaluation follows a request from the Governing Body of the ILO, made at its November 2012 Session. The evaluation will be carried out between March and June 2013. |

Partnership with the Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM) In 2013 the School of Governance began a long-term partnership with the Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM), with a view to evaluating their ‘Migrants as Entrepreneurs’ programme. CIM is a consortium between the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Federal Employment Agency and is situated in Frankfurt, Germany. The ‘Migrants as Entrepreneurs’ programme supports migrants who live in Germany and plan to return to their home countries to set up small or medium enterprises. Current programme countries are Morocco, Cameroon and Georgia. |

European Policy Debate on Afghan Migration As part of the IS Academy Project, we plan to hold a European Policy debate on Afghan migration in Brussels from 8-9 April 2013. The first day of the event will enable researchers to present their latest research on migration from and within Afghanistan. The second day will be a policy debate allowing policy makers, academics, and other relevant actors to discuss key issues. |

Workshop on Migration and Entrepreneurship To review the state-of-the-art on research into the links between migration and entrepreneurship, the Maastricht Schools of Management and Governance will hold a two-day workshop on 30-31 May 2013. On the eve of the conference, 29 May 2013, we will also hold an International Policy Debate, giving policy makers, academics, and relevant institutions a platform to share their research and ideas on remittances and entrepreneurship. |

Session on Survey Research in Developing Countries At the European Survey Association Conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia (15-19 July 2013), Dr Melissa Siegel (MGSoG, Maastricht University and UNU-MERIT) and Evelyn Ersanilli (International Migration Institute, University of Oxford) will lead a session on ‘Survey research in developing countries’. They will explore the challenges of conducting surveys in developing countries and discuss best practices. |

Migration Seminars On 20 March 2013, Dr Carlos Vargas-Silva of Oxford University’s Migration Observatory presented ‘Forced Up or Down? The Impact of Forced Migration on Social Status’. Watch a short interview with Dr. Vargas on our YouTube Channel. In April we will hold two migration seminars. On 5 April, Eleni Diker (MPP Alumna) from IOM Istanbul will present ‘Human Trafficking in Turkey: Challenges of Victim Identification Process’ and on 10 April Tobias Stöhr will present ‘Migration of adult children and elderly left behind’. Migration Studies Online Course Our Migration and Remittance Effects and Comparative Migration Policy online courses begin on 6 May 2013 and run until 28 June. These courses are designed for people who want to boost their knowledge of migration without following a full-time programme. The series begins again in July with Introduction to Migration Studies. |

Migration Management Diploma Programme (MMDP) Classes for our Migration Management Diploma Programme start on 2 April 2013. Ten participants from Ghana, Kenya, Benin, Burundi, Nigeria, Azerbaijan and Nepal, recipients of scholarships from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will arrive shortly in the Netherlands to start the first ever MMDP course. The course will run for three years and is specially designed for practitioners and civil servants from developing countries who are either working on or interested in migration management. |

Measuring and mitigating poverty among forced migrant children Sponsored by UNICEF Iran, representatives from UNU-Merit and the School of Governance are flying to Iran to deliver a special training to members of the Iranian Government. By the end of the training participants will have a clear understanding of concepts such as poverty, deprivation, vulnerability, and social exclusion; and be able to apply these concepts specifically to children. Participants will also know how to measure multidimensional poverty and will have created their own set of indicators specifically for the Iranian context. |

Civic Integration Knowledge Exchange: Final Meeting The final meeting of the Civic Integration Knowledge Exchange Network was held on 21 March 2013. The project, launched by the Dutch Government and co-organized by Panteia and the School of Governance, has enabled the sharing of expertise and information among people working on civic integration in France, Germany, the Netherlands and UK. |

Diaspora Engagement Technical Roundtable Dr Melissa Siegel and Vivianne van der Vorst attended the ‘Diaspora Engagement Technical Roundtable’ in Kingston, Jamaica on 25 February 2013. The Inter-American Development Bank organized the event through its Compete Caribbean programme (www.competecaribbean.org), a private sector development initiative that provides technical assistance, grants and investment funding in the Caribbean region. |

Profiling Ethiopian migration: A comparison of characteristics of Ethiopian migrants to Africa, the Middle East and the North This chapter summarizes the various characteristics of migrants from Ethiopia to three different migration destinations: northern countries, other African countries, and the Middle East. The results show that the characteristics of the migrants and their origin households differ depending on migration destination, that increased migration flows to Africa and the Middle East in recent decades have played an important role in reshaping the profile of Ethiopian migrant, and that current Ethiopian migration flows coincide with some of the current global migration trends, while also contrasting with some of the overall migration figures representing Africa. |
