| Indian Government to Promote H2 fuelled automobiles |
The government of India will invest heavily in hydrogen gas-based
automobiles, with large scale demonstration of such vehicles slated for
the eleventh plan and commercialization in the following 5 year plan.
According to S.K Chopra, principal adviser and special secretary,
ministry of non-conventional energy, the government has plans to set up
hydrogen fuelling stations for hydrogen vehicles. One such station will
be operation in early 2008. A national hydrogen energy road map has been
prepared and technology missions identified. The government has also set
up a national hydrogen energy board which has participation of
industrialists and scientists. Benaras Hindu University has already
tested 15 hydrogen fuelled two-wheelers. The vehicles store hydrogen in
solid form as rods made up of a chemical called hydride. The hydrogen
gas is released when these rods are heated and produces energy for
running vehicles. After charging up the rods at a hydrogen fuel station
a vehicle can run for 50-60 kms. ; |
