| Prof. Finn Tarp |
As of September 1st, Prof. Finn Tarp (Denmark) will succeed Prof. Anthony Shorrocks as director of UNU-WIDER (World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University). UNU-WIDER’s and UNU-MERIT’s research and policy analysis has always been of great complementary value. UNU-MERIT wants to thank Prof. Shorrocks for his enormous institutional efforts over the last eight years and hence wishes his successor, Prof. Tarp, a successful start.

A video of the public lecture by Dr. Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research, which he held on April 20 after a visit to UNU-MERIT, is now online available for viewing. UNU-MERIT paper awarded Posted: 2009-06-04 | Updated: 2009-06-16
On May 31st the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) has honoured the paper ‘Designing plans for organizational development, lessons from three large-scale SME-initiatives’ as the IIE’s 2009 Best Track Paper in Engineering Management. The article has been a successful collaborative effort between UNU-MERIT and the Kizok Institute of Hasselt University and came forth out of the comprehensive UNU-MERIT project ‘Strategic Innovation’. Guided by the awarded paper writers consisting of UNU-MERIT research-fellows Raf Sluismans, Tinne Lommelen and Friso den Hertog, this project supported the strategy-development of 650 small and medium firms in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion and generated a large amount of data of which the honoured paper is a result. The article sets out a balanced design and development in three specific case projects in order to contribute to creating and accumulating knowledge that is both relevant to practitioners and academics.

Yilin Wu (China) joined UNU-MERIT as a visiting PhD-researcher on May 1st and will stay within the Institute until February 2010. From 2002 until 2008 Yilin studied Statistics at the School of Statistics at Renmin University in Beijing and obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Economics. Since 2006 she has been a PhD candidate in Economics at Renmin University and in this cadre she spends one year abroad. At UNU-MERIT she will be supervised by Prof. Pierre Mohnen and Dr. Can Huang. Yilin will contribute to the NANO-research projects and data collection and other statistical elements of the World Knowledge Report. Furthermore, in September Yilin will follow a couple of courses and has the ambition to write articles for scientific magazines. Her main research interest involves international competitiveness of and between countries, industries, regions and sectors.

From 10 until 12 May, UNU-MERIT professorial fellows Jacques Mairesse and Pierre Mohnen in cooperation with the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA) organized the Third Conference on Micro Evidence on Innovation and Development (MEIDE) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The conference was very successful in achieving its main aim: to bring together researchers from around the world to discuss the importance and the different dimensions of innovation in relation with economic growth and development. Being hosted in Rio de Janeiro, MEIDE 2009 especially emphasized on innovation and its impacts in Latin America. UNU-MERIT research-fellows present at conference on measuring creativity Posted: 2009-06-04
Within the context of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009, the European Commission has launched an initiative to explore the feasibility of measuring creativity at national, regional and individual levels. To this end, an international conference on creativity and innovation, which took place in Brussels on 28 and 29 May, explored the adequacy of using a limited number of indicators derived from existing statistical sources to address creativity at an aggregate level. UNU-MERIT research-fellows Hugo Hollanders and Adriana van Cruysen were among the more than 250 participants presenting the results of their report on measuring creativity, design and innovation at the national level.

Large amount of African papers selected for GLOBELICS 2009 Posted: 2009-06-04
Almost 200 papers have been selected to be presented at the GLOBELICS 2009 conference, which takes place this year from 5 until 8 October in Dakar, Senegal. This year’s selection procedure has been a particularly difficult one since the GLOBELICS scientific committee had to make an assortment out of 480 papers. The final selection of 199 articles consists of 64 African papers, making it the largest continental share. Papers originating from Europe (52) and Asia (43) are also well represented at the event.
