UNU-MERIT to host ICIM2008 Posted: 2008-05-06 UNU-MERIT will host the 5th International Conference on Innovation and Management (ICIM2008) in Maastricht, the Netherlands, from 10-11 December. Organized annually in rotation by Yamaguchi University in Japan and the Wuhan University of Technology in China, this is the first time the conference is organized in Europe. This follows the signing of an agreement to foster future collaboration between the three institutes in December 2007. The conference series aims to bring together managerial experts and researchers in the field of innovation, technology and management to explore ways of enhancing the international competitiveness of firms, technology sectors and countries. The recent summit of the key UN agencies and multilateral development funding organizations on rising food prices has underlined the seriousness of a looming global crisis. In a recently published article, Dr. Andy Hall, coordinator of the UNU-MERIT/FAO network on rural innovation policy studies (LINK) asks whether the adoption of innovation systems ideas by the agricultural research community will address the institutional failures and lack of political will that have enabled unsustainable food production and distribution practices to take root.

| Several UNU-MERIT PhD researchers participated at the first European model United Nations conference in Maastricht from 17-20 April. The successful event attracted more than 450 participants and was organized by the Maastricht University UN Students Association, in collaboration with several international institutes linked to the university

Flavia Carvalho (Brazil) joined the UNU-MERIT Phd Programme on "Innovation Studies and Development" in September 2006 and is carrying out research on foreign direct investment from emerging markets with a focus on Brazilian multinationals. Flavia is participating at the Columbia University conference "Thinking outward: global players from emerging markets," in May, which is co-organized by Fundacao Dom Cabral in Brazil where she will be undertaking research in the second half of 2008. In this month’s personal reflection she explains why there is more to Brazil than sun, sand and parties.

UNU-MERIT's Ionara Costa and Flavia Carvalho participated at the first conference of the "Five-Diamond" International Conference Cycle at Columbia University on 28-29 April. Titled, "Thinking outward: global players from emerging markets," the conference was co-organized by the Columbia Program on International Investment; Fundação Dom Cabral (Brazil); School of Management at Fundan University (China); Indian School of Business (Hyderabad, India); and Skolkovo Moscow School of Management (Russia), with the collaboration of the UNDP Special Unit for South-South Cooperation. The Five-Diamond conference series focuses on internationalization activities of firms from emerging economies, particularly the four BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Knowledge Economies: Innovation, Organization and Location Posted: 2008-05-06
This new book by UNU-MERIT researcher Wilfred Dolfsma makes a strong and coherent contribution to the discussion of the knowledge economy and of innovation, offering a range of theoretical insights from different disciplinary perspectives. The role of knowledge, knowledge development, and knowledge diffusion is discussed at the micro level of individuals and firms, but also at the level of groups of firms and sectors, as well as at the level of the economy at large.
