UNU-MERIT panel discussion at UN Headquarters Posted: 2008-04-04

UNU-MERIT and the UNU Office at the United Nations, New York (UNU-ONY) convene a panel discussion at UN Headquarters on 20 March entitled: Prize or Patent? Innovative ideas for funding medical drug development and access. Speakers include Jamie Love, Director, Knowledge Ecology International (KEI); Kalipso Chalkidou, Associate Director, Research and Development, National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, UK; A.E.O. Ogwell, Head of International Relations at the Kenyan ministry of health; Dilip Shah, Secretary General, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance; and Rishab Aiyer Ghosh, Senior Researcher and Head of the Collaborative Creativity Group at UNU-MERIT. The event follows the recent KEI/UNU-MERIT international workshop on Medical Prizes on 28 & 29 January.

Dr. Michiko Iizuka joined UNU-MERIT in February 2008 as Researcher. With a particular interest in the role of developing countries in global governance of knowledge, she will be contributing to the Institute's research group on "The Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI)." The group develops new knowledge, concepts, analyses and recommendations for policymakers to help them respond effectively to emerging governance challenges posed by the increasing globalization (and regionalization) of the economy, and the rise of knowledge-driven economies that are reshaping the contours of STI governance.

Dr. Suma Athreye joined UNU-MERIT in February 2008, on secondment from Brunel Business School, London, UK, where she is Reader in International Business and Strategy. At UNU-MERIT, Dr. Athreye will undertake three main strands of research related to her interests in technology and development of the Indian economy. The first strand of work will examine the evolution of business models used by firms in the Indian software sector. A second strand of research compares the internationalization of operations by Chinese and Indian firms and the third strand of work examines the relative impact of technology outsourcing in developing the science base of the Indian and Chinese economies.

UNU Institutes collaborate on entrepreneurship project Posted: 2008-03-13 Two of the largest UNU Institutes, UNU-MERIT and the World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) in Finland are collaborating on the organization of a joint international workshop on "Entrepreneurship, Technological Innovation and Economic Development" at UNU-MERIT on 30&31 October 2008. The workshop is part of a larger WIDER project on "Building Entrepreneurial Capacity." Coordinated by Wim Naudé at WIDER and Adam Szirmai at MERIT, the deadline for submissions of abstracts for the workshop is 30 May 2008. |

New DEIP course announced Posted: 2008-03-10 Applications are invited for a second training workshop for policymakers in the Design and Evaluation of Innovation Policy (DEIP) series. The workshop will take place in Maastricht from 10-14 November 2008. The deadline for applications is 15 August.
The deadline for applications to attend the DEIP course taking place from 21 to 23 May in Hangzhou, China, is 30 March. |

For the past two years Professor Norbert Janz has been collaborating with UNU-MERIT’s research group on “Micro-based evidence research on innovation and technological change,” while on sabbatical from the Aachen University of Applied Services in Germany where he is Professor of Economics. Prof. Janz recently spent two months at the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa (HSRC) in Cape Town where he gave a number of courses and provided training support to researchers on R&D, Innovation and Economic Development. Prof. Janz has long experience in conducting innovation surveys in Europe, including six years as coordinator of the German innovation survey.

UNU-MERIT researchers speak at international conference Posted: 2008-03-11 Director Luc Soete was one of the keynote speakers at the international conference "Knowledge on the Move: Research for development in a globalising world" in The Hague, from 26-29 February. The conference was organized by three international research and higher education organizations in The Netherlands: NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development, Nuffic and the Institute of Social Studies. Also at the conference was UNU-MERIT researcher Andy Hall, who gave a paper entitled: “Embedding research in society supporting agricultural innovation in a global knowledge economy.” |

Innovation And Economic Development (2007) is edited by Lynn Krieger Mytelka, a former Director of the UNU-Institute for New Technologies (INTECH) in Maastricht.
The wide-ranging volume brings together the path-breaking work pioneering researchers in this field, as well as more recent studies by a new generation of researchers. The volume contains contributions by several UNU-MERIT staff and fellows including Lynn Mytelka, Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, Rajah Rasiah, René Kemp, Luc Soete, Robin Cowan and Andy Hall.
