| Presentations and discussions at the MUNDO conference |
With an estimated 4.5 million students expected to cross borders in search of the best education opportunities by 2020, universities must focus much more on building partnerships and contributing to international knowledge networks. Furthermore, to remain relevant to local contexts and reduce brain drain, developing country universities need to introduce new training methods that strengthen links with local communities and enhance the employability of their graduates. These were among the key conclusions at a recent conference organized by MUNDO, Maastricht University’s Centre for international cooperation in academic development. Keynote speakers included Jo Ritzen, President of Maastricht University; Dan Ngayana, University of Transkei; South Africa, Ruud Treffers, Director General International Cooperation, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Akilagpa Sawyerr, Secretary General, Association of African Universities; and Luc Soete, Director, UNU-MERIT.
