Successful DEIP workshop held Posted: 2007-11-15
|
 |
| Dr. Jo Ritzen, Chairman of the Board of Maastricht University |
From 22 to 26 October, UNU-MERIT hosted a training session on the Design and Evaluation of Innovation Policy in developing countries (DEIP). 32 participants from 20 countries attended the course, which was coordinated by Prof. Eddy Szirmai. Topics discussed included intellectual property rights, education policies, systems of innovation, financing of innovation, innovation surveys and investing in absorptive capacities. Prof. dr. Jo Ritzen, Chairman of the Board of Maastricht University and a former minister of education in the Netherlands was one of the speakers. The last day of the session was devoted to twenty country presentations by the participants. Bilal Mirza, a UNU-MERIT PhD researcher who facilitated the country presentations, observed that one of the best things about the DEIP series is the opportunity it provides for both researchers and policymakers to learn about different innovation approaches and to appreciate the diversity of local contexts. While some countries are focused on finetuning their comparative advantages in specific high tech sectors others may be looking for new ideas on how they can achieve their poverty reduction targets. Many participants expressed interest in hosting DEIP sessions as it will enable them to engage with local stakeholders and facilitate a more integrated approach to formulating their innovation policies.

Innovative SMEs study concluded Posted: 2007-11-05
A research project examining the production of information and communication technologies by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the EU-25 has been concluded. The study included a review of best practice national and regional case studies from Israel, Cambridge (UK), Stockholm (Sweden), and Etna Valley in Sicily (Italy). One of the key findings of the study, which formally ends in December 2007, was to confirm the interlinkages between research, innovation and economic performance. 80% of innovative ICT SMEs in the sample achieved high (over 10%) or medium (between 5 and 10%) sales and profitability growth over the past 3 years, which was higher than the average growth of the ICT market in 2006. Theo Dunnewijk and Kaushalesh Lal coordinated the study at UNU-MERIT.
