On 27 September Suhail Sami Sultan succesfully defended his PhD thesis entitled
"The Competitive Advantage of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises: The
Case of Jordan's Natural Stone Industry". The thesis describes how SMEs
working in processing the natural stone sector in Jordan located in the
factor-driven stage can move to the innovation-driven stage.
Promotors were Prof. dr. Luc Soete (UNU-MERIT) and Prof. dr. Dragan Nikolik (Maastricht School of Management)

UNU-MERIT contributes to Portugal’s EU-China Initiative Posted: 2007-09-21

UNU-MERIT is one of four institutions collaborating with the European Commission on a global project launched during Portugal’s Presidency of the EU. Entitled "Dialogues for a Sustainable Development,” the project will directly feed into the summits and strategic partnerships of the EU with China, India, Russia, India, Brazil, South Africa and others. An ongoing UNU-MERIT study of the Chinese innovation system will be presented at a workshop in Paris later this month as part of preparations for the EU-China summit in November.

UNU to enhance access to its learning materials Posted: 2007-09-03 United Nations University has launched the UNU Open Courseware Project, a joint initiative of four UNU centres: UNU Online Learning, the UNU International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST), the UNU International Network on Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) and UNU-MERIT. The project aims to provide open access to all educational materials used in UNU capacity development and training programmes. |

The topic was “Developing Business Strategies for Low-income Markets”

The 5th GLOBELICS Conference takes place in Saratov, Russia from 19-23 September on the theme, "Regional and National Innovation Systems for Development, Competitiveness and Welfare: the Government-Academia-Industry Partnership." As in past years there will be a strong UNU-MERIT presence at the meeting, with eight accepted papers. One of the highlights this year will be a special session commemorating the 25th anniversary of Nelson & Winter’s seminal book "Evolutionary theory of economic changes."
