Feasibility of proposed European Institute of Technology Investigated Posted: 0000-00-00
An independent study examining the feasibility of establishing a European Institute of Technology (EIT) has been presented to the European Parliament. Commissioned by the European Parliament at the request of its Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, the study team was led by Dr. Peter Tindemans, a former Chair of the OECD Megascience Forum, and UNU-MERIT Director, Prof. Luc Soete.

Lisbon Monitoring Platform now operational Posted: 0000-00-00
An interactive online platform that provides up to date information on more than 65 regional and local authorities across the EU-27 is now operational. Commissioned by the EU Committee of the Regions, the platform provides information on the local and regional dimensions of the Lisbon strategy, gives an overview of the development of these local and regional dimensions through an interactive scoreboard, and offers a public space for discussion. UNU-MERIT researchers René Wintjes and Theo Dunnewijk developed the typology and regional profiles on which the Platform is based as part of a research team led by Lacave Allemand & Associes.

Last call for feedback: European Service Economy Posted: 0000-00-00
The recently completed report by the European Commission’s Expert Group on Innovation in Services outlines a set of policy recommendations to encourage and fully exploit the innovative potential of services to foster growth and development of the service economy in Europe. The report will feed into the Commission’s strategy to foster innovation in services, to be outlined in a Staff Working Document in mid-2007. Comments on the recommendations of the Expert Group are currently being received and can be emailed until 13 April 2007. Please indicate: “report of the Expert Group on innovation in services” in the subject line.

FACE OF THE MONTH: Can Huang Posted: 0000-00-00
Can Huang joined UNU-MERIT in February of 2007 after defending his Ph.D. dissertation titled "China's Innovation System and Industrial Competitiveness in the Global Context" at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. His research interests include economics of innovation, industrial economics, and science and technology policy analysis. He is currently involved in four research projects:
- sectoral innovation systems in Europe: monitoring, analysing trends and identifying challenges (SYSTEMATIC)
- a collaborative project with colleagues in the US and China to research R&D investment interaction between domestic and foreign firms in the Chinese manufacturing sectors;
- a proposal on Nanotechnology for the EU 7th Framework Programme; and
- a Community Innovation Survey (CIS) of the innovation activities of firms in Haidian District, Beijing City.

New DIMETIC Summer School in Hungary Announced Posted: 0000-00-00
A third annual session in the DIMETIC (Dynamics of Institutions and Markets in Europe) series to be held in Pecs, Hungary, has been announced. The inaugural session will take place from 2-13 July 2007 and will address Regional and Policy Dimensions of Innovation and Growth. The autumn school at UNU-MERIT will take place from 8-18 October 2007 on the topic: Modelling, Systems and Dynamics.The DIMETIC workshops are open to younger researchers working in this area.

DEIP courses in 2007 Posted: 0000-00-00 UNU-MERIT will organize three new training courses for policymakers as part of its Design and Evaluation of Innovation Policy (DEIP) series in 2007. Planning is currently underway for workshops in Pakistan, Brazil and Maastricht later this year and registration information will be available shortly.
