Innovations by Mauritius textile industry, government paying off Posted: 0000-00-00
Until quite recently Mauritius' clothing and textiles industry faced a bleak future, with external pressures such as the dismantling of the Multi-Fibre Agreement in January 2005 and the emergence of low-cost producers such as China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka greatly eroding its export revenues. However, the sector appears to be reinventing itself and carving out a global niche as a supplier of upper range commodities. A recent UNU-MERIT study has analysed changes within the national policy environment, as well as the textile sector that helped drive the restructuring of the industry. The study findings will be published as a UNU-MERIT Working Paper shortly. For more information, please write to the study coordinator, Dr. Kaushalesh Lal.

FACE OF THE MONTH: Eveline in de Braek Posted: 0000-00-00
Eveline in de Braek joined INTECH (now UNU-MERIT) in August 2001 as research secretary, and is currently responsible for the two PhD Programmes. A native of Limburg, the southern-most province of the Netherlands where the Institute is based, Eveline enjoys interacting with the Institute's multicultural staff and acquainting them with the sometimes strange traditions of this part of the world.
“I am proud of the opportunity to work in an international environment, and to work with PhD students right from the moment they join the institute, to their final thesis defence.”
