Charles Cooper Memorial Lecture series
Poster Charles Cooper Memorial Lecture Prof. Raphie Kaplinsky (Sussex University) will give the inaugural UNU-MERIT Public Lecture in honour of the founding Director of UNU-Institute for New Technologies (INTECH), Charles Cooper. Prof. Cooper, who passed away in January 2005, oversaw the expansion of the Maastricht-based Institute to become one of the largest research and training centres of United Nations University. The inaugural lecture will recognize Cooper's early contribution to the study of technological development by focusing on the challenges of industrial development and innovation in today's highly competitive global environment.

The Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium has hosted a conference on The Millenium Development Goals: Assessment and Perspectives, in honour of the outgoing UNU Rector, Professor H. Van Ginkel. Several European-based UNU institutes: UNU-CRIS (Belgium), UNU-WIDER (Finland), UNU-EHS (Germany) and UNU-MERIT participated at the conference, from 1-3 December.

UNU-MERIT teams up with UNU-INRA

UNU-MERIT and the Ghana-based UNU Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA) have launched a collaborative research project to explore options for “scaling-up” agricultural innovations in West Africa. The project will examine the diffusion of the “New Rice for Africa” or NERICA rice variety in the region. UNU-MERIT PhD alumnus, Dr. Daniel Dalohoun, is carrying out the study in collaboration with the Institute’s regional hub on rural innovation policy studies (LINK) in Eastern Africa.

UNU-MERIT Researcher Dr. Padmashree Gehl-Sampath has been commissioned to undertake a study for the UNCTAD Least Developed Countries Report (LDCR 2007), which will address the role of knowledge. Dr. Gehl-Sampath will investigate whether intellectual property rights have stimulated innovation by domestic processing firms in Bangladesh. The study will collect firm-level data on the agro-processing, and textile and garments sectors.
